[MovieBuzz] Re:Solve 决义案

resolveIf I were to be honest, I don’t think I have been a huge fan/supporter of the local film industry. Probably because I can’t relate very well to the local sense of humor, which unfortunately everything seems very lame/fake to me, or I find them all “sama, sama” (same, same in Malay). If you are a movie/tv junkie like I am, you can certainly tell which films are produced from which country based on their plot, style etc.

So Hong Kong is rather known for our (I’m still born in Hong Kong afterall, will always be a partial home to me..haha) police/crime/gangster classics. The whole police vs lawbreakers/triads relationship seems to be more seductive, probably due to the high adrenaline tenuous border between the two. So why only Hong Kong? Can’t we also produce something good and new in the Singapore’s film scene apart from the usual naggy parents who wants their kids to score A1, kids who cry too much in every other scene or something that only Singaporeans can relate to instead of going more international?  Question

ceremony

So recently the media has been talking, there’s an upcoming movie that just kick started its production. “Re:Solve 决义案” is gonna be the first police action thriller in Singapore!  This feature film will be directed by Randy Ang, who happens to be a friend and also an alumnus from the same design school I attended a couple of years back. Extra props for that!  But anyway, personally I am looking forward to this because finally we Singaporeans have something that is not sappy/lame/with boring family plot/too localized for international audience…but actually exciting enough to emerge from the Asian cinema that we can proudly call our own!  Yes

Anyways, there’s Sunny Pang and two really hot Taiwanese leads, Chris Lee 李至正 and Mico Chang 张玮纯 to look out for in the movie too. Of course there are familiar local faces of the Singapore TV scene too. (oh..psst..friends from our local twittersphere will notice a familiar name/face too! *coughs*)  Not gonna share more but do like their facebook page here if you want to be updated on the progress and look at more pictures/videos! Can’t wait to be back from Beijing for its premiere!  Laugh

disclaimer: I wish I’m paid to write this but no I wasn’t..haha..just genuinely looking forward to the movie (haha setting such high expectations eh? lol just kidding) and supporting my friends+local industry as a whole!  Cool

AOTW [43] : Example

I’m never a huge fan of such music genre but I was quite addicted to this song after hearing it on my flight to Hong Kong earlier this August. It has quite a catchy tune and I thought the lyrics weren’t that stupid as compared to songs of the same genre. In fact, I think i like it!  it is  Example is a British rapper and ‘Kickstart’ is the third single from his album ‘Won’t go quietly’. Enjoy !

Example – Kickstarts

You want me to come over I got an excuse
Might be holding your hand but i’m holding it loose
Go to talk then we choke its like our necks in a noose
Avoid the obvious we should be facing the truth

Start to think it could be fizzling out
Kinda shocked because I never really had any doubts
Look into your eyes imagine life with out ya

And the love kick starts again
Starts again

The Love kick starts again
Starts again

Its the same old you the same old me
You get bored and I get cold feet
Get high get wandering eyes
Forget i’ve never ever had it so sweet
I realise what I got when I’m out of town
Cos deep down you’re my girl in a golden crown
My princess and I don’t wanna let you down
No I Don’t wanna let you down down down down

You want me to come over I got an excuse
Might be holding your hand but im holding it loose
Go to talk then we choke its like our necks in a noose
Avoid the obvious we should be facing the truth

Start to think it could be fizzling out
Kinda shocked because I never really had any doubts
Look into your eyes imagine life with out ya

And the love kick starts again
Starts again

Movie Buzz : Triple Tap 槍王之王

Triple Tap (槍王之王) is a psychological thriller directed by Derek Yee, starring Louis Koo who plays this Champion sharpshooter while Daniel Wu is his fellow marksman and police officer, they met at an IPSC competition and later Koo gets involved in this robbery case that Wu was investigating. Their confrontation reveals the different back stories and brings out a myriad of lies as the two try to outsmart eachother. Think along the line of  The Mentalist or Lie To Me but wrapped in a typical old school Hong Kong crime movie.

Despite the fact that it’s an all star cast and the male leads are drool-worthy, they weren’t exactly great in terms of acting. Both have a standard facial expression without any emotions. They were so ‘serious’ that it was too funny to watch – guess it quite backfired the whole idea of having two ‘cool’ men pulling triggers at each other. I almost choked at Louis Koo’s ‘Are You Ready?’  Sadly the two female leads Charlene Choi and Li Bingbing have little  scenes to comment about. The plot was trying too hard to be clever that it ended up being pathetic instead. I don’t feel there’s a connection with the audience and it totally did not snag my attention at all.

Not much of an action saga either, although I did notice that Chin Kar Lok is the action choreographer, what a disappointment. I do see potential in this film, especially when the production seems to be above average in terms of Hong Kong films. Well, at least the guns were pretty cool and I learnt what’s IPSC  after watching this film !

It’s a pity that this highly anticipated great film turned out like this, perhaps it might be better if watched in Cantonese instead of the monotone mandarin voice-overs. I’ll give this a 2/5 but if you’re a sucker for some asian action or eyecandy moments, then go ahead and catch this film on a weekday. It’s gonna be out on 1st July 2010.

P.S : Following Trailers are all in Cantonese !

I have to mention, nobody beats Leslie Cheung as the marksman in Double Tap (I think Triple Tap is an unofficial sequel ?) Move aside Louis Koo, you need to learn.

Speak and Listen to your consumers !

More and more businesses are getting on social networking platforms, especially Twitter. I’ve come across many (in fact, way too many) company accounts that are either pretty much inactive or can be classified as ‘spammers’. Sure, 140 characters is good enough for business advertisements, quick and cost-effective. What’s more ? It’s free ! But doing it the wrong way can actually backfire your plans and destroy all potential relationships you may gain.

From personal experiences, I think it is important for business to bear in mind a few tips before starting to reach out to your crowd on social networking sites, IMHO :

1) Know your audience, listen to their needs !

Recently there was this email spam from a certain property agency that pissed most tweeples off. As for me, I think it’s quite silly to email me (of all people!) who have yet to pay off my university debt to check out the new apartments in town. Seriously, do some research and  know who are your target audience ! Obviously I don’t need a condo yet?!

ascott

I think it’s a good and important thing that companies are starting to ‘listen’ online to their consumer’s needs too ! I tweeted about looking for a short term rental apartment in Hong Kong just yesterday and I got a reply from @Ascott_Ltd recommending their serviced residences. Perfect example of listening to what your customers need and responding to what they are looking for, without sounding too pushy.

2) Don’t just be yet-another-brand, be personal !

It’s no longer about how ‘BIG’ your brand is but consumers need to be ‘entertained’. It’s nice to know there are ‘real people’ behind the online presence too. We like to see behind-the-scenes after a movie is out, so same goes for brands online. We’re not talking to bots afterall !

standingsushiI personally like @standingsushi even thought I have yet to try their food. Mainly because I read about them on their blog and I really liked how they bring their concept across. And when I mentioned to my bestie that I want to visit @standingsushi someday, I immediately received a personal message to welcome my future visit. It certainly makes me want to go down and check it out personally (real soon!).

3) It’s about profit BUT more about relationship !

Be a ‘friend’ rather than an annoying salesman. You need to build a relationship based on trust, sincerity and constant interaction. Sure, not everyone can buy your products all the time but hey, no harm retweeting or spreading the message to others who can possibly do so if I like you. Don’t just follow everyone and expects to be followed back instantly. It’s not about the numbers either.

I like @thegardenslug alot as you can see from my tweets if you’ve been following. I started off not knowing what they have to offer but I don’t feel that their main objectives of being online is to force people to visit them but  instead, to build a relationship with their customers. That’s definitely a (Popsicle) brownie point for me and when I visited them, I knew it won’t be the last time I’m going over because The Garden Slug won my heart with their friendliness and awesome food.

4) Don’t act like a naggy old fart. Stop repeating the same messages!

This is spamming. Quality over quantity. 987123415623 tweets about the same product isn’t going to get you sales. We get your message but we may not like it. In fact, count yourself lucky if you still have 1 follower at the end of the day.

5) Reach out – help – contribute !

Sometimes it’s not just about your brand. No one really cares about you on twitter since it’s such a huge community unless you reach out to them individually. Introduce yourself at the right time – don’t be too money-minded aka not too eager to sell your product/services. Promote others or retweet their messages is a good way to start, it’s not just about you afterall. It’s all about the charm and making people genuinely interested in you. Share interesting relevant links or include pictures or videos in your messages. People will follow you if they enjoy reading your tweets.

6) Customer is always number 1. (not entirely true but that’s the saying)

(Almost) Real-time customer service is probably the best thing that one can get from social networking sites. I like how @Starhubcares try to answer to everyone’s enquries and drop direct messages to assist you when you are getting pissed holding on to the phone for half an hour listening to that awful waiting tone. Sometimes it just takes a tiny effort to pacify your angsty customers and we like it when you are willing to listen to our feedback and improve. It’s a 2 way communication afterall.

Of course I’m no expert and I may be wrong but at least that’s how I feel as a consumer. Any good case studies or examples that you can think of ? Or any other tips you can think of to share ? Open to discussion =)

Movie Buzz : Astro Boy !

Caught the premiere screening of Astro Boy with the boyfriend at Golden Village earlier on. Before I share my thoughts on Astro Boy, I think Singaporeans are really inconsiderate when it comes to such events which are free seating. I don’t see how you can’t move in -  knowing that others who come in later than you will have a hard time moving to the middle seats. OR putting your bags next to you to occupy another seat. Like seriously, quite a disgrace to call myself Singaporean when you are in such situations.

Anyways, the synopsis for Astro Boy reads something like how a typical Japanese cartoon would be like – Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist. The robot then turns into a hero and save Metro City and embarks on a journey in search of his destiny. Cliché but it was not what I was expecting after the nice happy start of the film.

Without a doubt, the best thing about Astro Boy was the hard hitting and rather dark first act that sets the back story. We see the brilliant scientist Dr. Tenma (Nicholas Cage) and his really smart human son being introduced. Not having a single clue of how Astro Boy’s story is like, I would have expected some science-experiment-went-wrong which transformed the son to a heroic figure with super powers as it’s a children-friendly film. How the film went was much darker and the emotional depth was surprisingly effective in the rejection scene which followed shortly between the scientist and the recreated son. I thought this component of the film was well handled and it gave a solid foundation for the film to kick off with.

Overall, the animation was not fantastic but attractive enough from both animation and cinematography perspective. I liked how 2D and 3D animation is blended together to produce a visually appealing piece. I think Imagi (the Hong Kong Animation Studio) did a slick job for the CG and kinda bring the whole story to life. There are a number of ‘useless’ yet interesting characters that piece the film together. For instance, I really liked the 3 robots called the “Robot Revolutionary Front” who were the comical relief in the film. Although it felt as though these sidekick characters were created to take up screen time but I think their presence added the entertainment element – even if they have no positive or negative impact for the story. You can totally agree with the robots’ last line” Well, I guess we didn’t actually do anything” – quite right!

One thing I’ve never liked about animation movies is that you have all these voices of  high profile actors are not necessary the best choice. Most of them were emotionless and flat when it comes to portraying their animated characters. Then again, I think guys will like Kristen Bell as Cora even if, in my opinion, Cora’s character was rather weak. I’m not sure how different the Manga is as compared to the film but I find the messages behind the story were literally in your face – like “how fitting in when you’re different from others harder to do than you thought” (somewhere along that line) or how you can never replace your loved ones etc. However, I find the music by John Ottman infused the right atmosphere and really fits the film.

Overall, the movie started off with a bang but weakens as the movie reaches the end. Especially when you were expecting the action to get more exciting – reaching “OH NO,ITS THE END OF THE WORLD” when the red core and the blue core meets…but hell no, it was a “That’s it ?!” disappointing moment for me. I didn’t quite get why the president kept repeating that he is trying to win an election, going on and on about it…like what’s the point ? (inside joke?) Isn’t evil guys suppose to destroy the world with such great power ?! That’s how the story should be like ! (I’m sadist)

It was quite a straightforward story for kids to understand with jokes that are good enough for the adults to chuckle over. I have a soft spot for this iconic figure created by Osamu Tezuka aka “God of Manga” because of his cute hairdo and spunky red boots. So I’ll say it’s a 4 out of 5 (despite my slightly negative review) for this fun family film that everyone can comes away happy for different reasons. It could have been better.

It opens in cinema this coming Thursday, 5th November !

9.18

15 years ago, I was sobbing my eyes out because I had to leave my friends and my life in Hong Kong.

15 years later…

Well, I think I still miss my friends and relatives in Hong Kong very much.

But I feel more like a Singaporean now, with a new life and new social circles and learning alot here.

I’ve met wonderful people and learn through my mistakes along the way.

I think these 15 years was a good learning journey personally in all aspects of my life.

I believe things happened for a reason, so Thank You for the 9.18 that happened 15 years ago.

It has become a tradition to “celebrate” this date with my family, funny as it sounds.

I think it has become more important than to celebrate new year or christmas together in fact.

so Happy 918 to everyone !
